Evaluating Players

Learn how to rate, rank, and complete Player Evaluations during tryouts on web and mobile, and how to export results.

Updated over a week ago

Sprocket supports three ways to evaluate players during tryouts. Your club can use one, or mix them together:

  • Rate Players: Give each player one overall numeric rating.

  • Rank Players: Put players in order within a player pool.

  • Player Evaluations: Score specific skills using a Tryout Evaluation form.

This article covers how to evaluate players on web and mobile, plus how to export results afterward.

What you’ll find in this article

  • How to get to evaluation tools

  • How to rate players with an overall rating

  • How to rank players

  • How to complete Player Evaluations (skill based evaluations)

  • How to export evaluation data

Before you begin

To evaluate players, make sure:

  • Players are added to the tryout registration and checked in (see Checking Players In for the Tryout).

  • Players are in the correct player pool (see Managing Player Groups).

  • Staff have Tryouts permissions and are assigned to the right player pools (see Staff Access and Permissions).

  • If you plan to use Player Evaluations, the form is created as a Tryout Evaluation and assigned to the tryout registration (see Configuring Player Evaluation Forms).

Evaluate players on web

Step 1: Open the tryout registration and choose your player pool

  1. In the left navigation, select Tryouts.

  2. Open the correct tryout registration.

  3. Use the filters at the top to narrow what you are viewing:

    • Player Pools

    • Tryout Dates

    • Selected Fields

  4. Click Search.

Tip: If you see players listed under Unassigned Players, those players may not match your Player Pool criteria yet. You can move them using Managing Player Groups.

Option 1: Rate Players on web (overall rating)

Use Rate Players when you want to give each player a single overall numeric rating for the tryout.

  1. Expand the player pool you want to evaluate.

  2. Click Edit Ratings.

  3. Enter an overall rating for each player.

  4. Save your changes.

Where this shows up:

  • Ratings appear in the table under the Rating column.

Ranking allows you to place players in order within a player pool.

  1. Expand the player pool you want to evaluate.

  2. Click Rank Players.

  3. Drag players from the left column to the right column in the order you want them ranked.

  4. If needed, use Order players by to sort the available list.

  5. Click Save.

Note: Rankings (and Ratings) are visible to admins after you save.

Option 3: Player Evaluations on web (rate specific skills)

Use Player Evaluations when you want evaluators scoring specific skills, like Technical, Tactical, or Physical.

  1. Expand the player pool you want to evaluate.

  2. Click Player Evaluations.

  3. In the evaluation tool, select the player you want to score.

  4. Score the player using the criteria sliders.

  5. Click the save icon to save the player’s evaluation.

Note: If you have multiple Player Evaluation Forms active for the tryout, the evaluator will start by selecting the Evaluation Form they would like to score.

Two ways to score in Player Evaluations

You can switch between two views depending on how your staff prefers to work:

  • Players: Select a player, then score them across all criteria.

  • Criteria: Select a criteria, then score multiple players for that criteria.

Tip: The completion counts next to each player and criteria help you track what is finished.

Export Player Evaluations

In the top right of the Player Evaluations tool, click Export All Evaluations.

Export overall ratings and tryout results from the registration page

From the View Player Pools page, you can also export results using the buttons in the top right, such as:

  • Export

  • Export All Ratings

Evaluate players in the mobile app

Step 1: Select the player pool you are evaluating

In the mobile app, staff must select a player pool before they will see evaluation options.

  1. Open the tryout registration.

  2. Tap the player pool you want to evaluate.

You will then see options like:

From here, you can rate players directly from the list.

Find the right player quickly:

  • Use Search Players to search by name.

  • Use Sort to change how players are listed.

  • Use the Tryout Dates dropdown to filter ratings to a specific tryout session if needed.

Enter a rating and notes:

  1. Locate the player.

  3. Use Criteria to score multiple players for one criteria.

  4. Save your changes as you go.

If you run into issues

I cannot find a player to evaluate

  • Confirm you selected the correct player pool.

  • Check if the player is listed under Unassigned Players on web.

  • Confirm the player was registered and checked in.

Evaluators cannot see Player Evaluations

  • Confirm the form is created as a Tryout Evaluation and assigned to the correct registration.

  • Confirm today falls within the start and end dates on the form assignment.

Other staff cannot see rankings, ratings, or evaluations

Rankings, ratings, and Player Evaluations are only visible to staff who have the Rating Visibility permission. In many clubs, coaches and evaluators do not have this permission, so their entries may not be visible to other staff by default.

If someone cannot see results they expect:

  • Confirm the evaluator entered the data in the correct player pool and tryout registration.

  • Confirm the viewer has the Rating Visibility permission under Staff > Roles & Permissions.
