How to Change a Team Name

Learn how to rename a team and update team details from Teams Setup in Sprocket. This guide also explains when to rename a team versus creating a new one for a new season.

Updated over a week ago

If you created a team by accident, used the wrong naming format, or just need to tidy up team details, you can update it directly from Teams Setup. This works whether the team was created from the Programs area or from the + Add Team button in Teams Setup.

Rename a team from Teams Setup

  1. In the left navigation, click Teams.

  2. Click Manage Teams.

  3. At the top of the page, select Teams Setup.

  4. Use the filters at the top (like Team Name, Program Type, or Program) to find the team.

  5. Click the team name in the list to open the edit page.

  6. Update the Team Name.

  7. Click Save.

Tip: If you are not seeing the team you expect, check the Inactive Teams filter. If it is set to exclude inactive teams, you may need to switch it to include them.

Edit other team details

On the same edit page where you rename the team, you can also update other team info such as:

  • Team Short Name (used in the mobile app if filled in)

  • Registration Label Override (what displays in the invitation banner)

  • Level

  • Inactive status

  • Other team options shown on the page (like Team Details Page or Team Color Option, if enabled for your club)

Once you make updates, click Save.

Best practice for new seasons or new programs

If you are setting up teams for a new season or year, we typically recommend creating new teams instead of renaming last season’s teams. This helps keep reporting and historical records clean.

If you run into issues

You can’t find a team: Adjust the filters, especially the inactive toggle.

Changes are not showing up right away: Refresh the page and re-open the team to confirm it saved.

You are unsure whether to rename or create a new team: Default to creating a new team for a new season, and rename only when correcting a mistake.
