Assigning Tryout Jersey Numbers Ahead of Time

Upload tryout jersey numbers in bulk using a CSV so numbers are ready before check-in and sort correctly on rating pages.

Updated over a week ago

If you want jersey numbers ready before check in starts, you can upload them in bulk using a CSV import. This is a helpful option when you already have pinnies assigned or want evaluators to see jersey numbers consistently during ratings.

You can also add jersey numbers one at a time during check in. That workflow is covered in Take Attendance at Tryouts.

Before you begin

  • Jersey numbers are imported from a CSV file.

  • The import uses Player ID to match each jersey number to the correct player.

  • For the cleanest sorting on rating pages, format jersey numbers consistently (details below).

Step 1: Go to Take Attendance

  1. In the left navigation, select Tryouts.

  2. Open the tryout registration you want to work with.

  3. Click Take Attendance.

Step 2: Export players to get Player IDs

  1. In the top right, open the Actions dropdown.

  2. Select Export.

  3. This downloads a file with your tryout players and includes the Player ID you will need for the import.

Step 3: Download the jersey number upload template

  1. Open the Actions dropdown again.

  2. Select Import.

  3. Select Tryout Jersey Number Upload Template.

Step 4: Fill out the template using the import layout

Use the Import Layout to populate your upload file. At minimum, you will fill out:

  • Player ID

  • Tryout Jersey Number

Tryout Jersey Number formatting tips

  • Jersey numbers can be alphanumeric.

  • If you use letters to indicate color or group (example: 12B), enter the numeric digits first, then any other characters.

  • To ensure rating pages sort by jersey number accurately:

    • Use the same number of numeric digits for all jersey numbers.

    • Example: use 01, 02, 34, 99 instead of 1, 2, 34, 99.

If you need 3-digit jersey numbers in a CSV

If you want all jersey numbers to be three digits (example: 001, 045, 120), you can format the column before saving the CSV:

  1. Highlight the Tryout Jersey Number column.

  2. Right click and select Format Cells.

  3. Select Custom.

  4. Enter 000.

  5. Confirm the values display as three digits.

Step 5: Save as CSV and import

  1. Save your file as a .csv.

  2. In Sprocket, open the Actions dropdown.

  3. Select Import.

  4. Click Upload, choose your CSV file, then select Import.

Clear existing jersey numbers (optional)

If jersey numbers already exist and you need to start over, you can clear them before re importing.

  1. Navigate to Tryouts.

  2. Open the correct tryout registration and session.

  3. Click Take Attendance.

  4. Open the Actions dropdown.

  5. Select Clear Tryout Jersey Numbers.

If you run into issues

  • If jersey numbers do not appear after import, confirm you used the correct Player ID values and saved the file as a .csv.

  • If sorting looks incorrect on rating pages, confirm all jersey numbers use the same digit length (example: 01, 02, 03).
