How to Configure Player Tiers

Learn how to configure Player Tiers for tryouts, including how tiers connect to player pools and how they are used during evaluations.

Updated over a week ago

Player Tiers help you group players into categories during tryout evaluations, like Local, Regional, and National. Tiers are set up per tryout registration and tied to one or more player pools within that registration.

What you’ll find in this article

  • Where to configure tiers

  • How tiers relate to player pools

  • How to create a tier

  • Important rules to know before evaluators start assigning tiers

Before you begin

Tiers are configured separately for each tryout registration. If you have multiple tryout registrations, you will repeat this setup for each one.

Tiers are set up on a per player pool basis. When you create a tier, you choose which player pool or pools it should apply to.

If you want to learn how staff assigns tiers while evaluating players, see Evaluating Players.

Step 1: Open Configure Tiers for a registration

  1. In the left navigation, select Tryouts.

  2. Select the tryout registration you want to configure.

  3. Click Configure Tiers.

You’ll see a list of existing tiers and an + Add Tier button.

Step 2: Create a new tier

  1. Click + Add Tier.

  2. In the Create Tier window, fill out:

    • Name (required): The tier label evaluators will use (examples: Local, Regional, National)

    • Player Pool (required): Select the player pool or pools this tier should apply to

Note: Player Pool is a multi-select dropdown, so you can use the same tier name across multiple player pools if needed.

  1. Click Save.

Repeat for each tier you want available during evaluations for that tryout registration.

How tiers work during evaluations

  • Players can only be in one tier.

  • A player can only be assigned to one tier at a time. If a player’s tier is updated, it replaces their previous tier.

  • Tier changes apply to all evaluators.

  • Tiers are shared across evaluators. If one evaluator updates a player’s tier, that tier update will be reflected for everyone.

Best practices

  • Set tiers before evaluations begin: This keeps evaluators aligned and avoids mid-tryout changes.

  • Keep tier names consistent: If you run multiple registrations, use the same tier naming structure across them so staff does not have to re-learn labels.

  • Use multi-select thoughtfully: If a tier should apply to multiple pools, select all relevant pools during tier creation so staff sees the same options for each pool.

If you run into issues

If you cannot find a tier option during evaluations, confirm the tier was created under the correct tryout registration and assigned to the correct player pool.

If a player’s tier keeps changing, remember that tiers are shared across evaluators and the most recent update overrides the previous one.

FAQs

Are Player Tiers global across the club?

No. Tiers are configured separately for each tryout registration.

Can I use the same tier name across multiple player pools?

Yes. Player Pool is a multi-select dropdown, so you can apply the same tier name to multiple player pools.

Can a player be assigned to more than one tier?

No. A player can only be assigned to one tier at a time. Updating a tier replaces the previous one.

Why did a player’s tier change unexpectedly?

Tiers are shared across evaluators. If another evaluator updates a player’s tier, the most recent update overrides the previous one.
